The law is saying it very clear: only the copyright owner has the right to distribute his music and reproduce it as many times as he likes. The song owner, or in many cases the artist, has the right to be paid if you download and listen his song. This is way it isn't legal to share music and download it. But some artists think about this legal matter. This is why most of them, who have their own website, allow fans to download samples of their latest hits. Also there are some artists that have some low quality songs that can be downloaded. But other singers have an online shop, where the user can purchase the song or maybe if he wants the entire album.
But there are some sites from where you can download music legally. For example have many free songs to offer, in mp3 file format. There is a collection of songs performed by famous artists, but also some new comers. There are some sites that allow you to download actually the stream, so that you can listen the song on your pc for how many times that you like, for free, but you can't save the actual song. Other sites are offering songs or entire albums for a price, usually a small one. For example iTunes was offering a song for about 99 cents and there are some good deals for albums also. But the disadvantage is that the song isn't in mp3 format or any known format, but in a protected format designed by Apple, so that the song can be played only on Ipods.
In the past, when internet was not used or even internet didn't existed, we only had the music stores as a source of music. And if we wanted to listen our favorite singer latest hits, we had to pay for it. But the latest generations aren't accustomed with this concept of paying for music, for what is essentially someone else work. So, if you are listening music fir which you didn't had to pay for, you are doing an illegal act. Untill the moment when record labels will decide to give their music for free, every time you open the Bit Torrent program you are actually stealing, because you are not paying. The Recording Industry Association of America is trying to punish some of these people that download and share music, without any right.
